vs
We've got a great game for you here today. The two players are Yeon-Ho Lee playing as the Zerg, and David Kim playing as the Protoss. They'll be playing on Scrapyard, a new StarCraft II map with lots of features. We've got Yeon-Ho as the blue Zerg in the upper-left part of the map and we can see the two players are very close across this gap of space. David Kim is here playing as the white Protoss.
There's a lot of interesting terrain features on Scrapyard, first is this base ramp. It is harder to block than ramps in the other Battle Reports. There is a natural expansion, where both players will likely build another base and gather more resources. These are smoke vents that units cannot see through. There is another natural expansion, as well as an important point of interest. This is a Xel'Naga Watch Tower, when activated by a ground unit, it illuminates a large area of vision, it is also surrounded by smoke vents. We just saw how much that Watch Tower reveals, it is very important to have control of. Control of that Watch Tower can be the key to victory on this map. David Kim's first Probe is now moving to the Zerg base. David Kim saw Yeon-Ho's Drone go for a natural expansion. Yeon-Ho is saving up resources as seen on the overlay. David Kim blocks the expansion, and Yeon-Ho sends out another Drone to stop the Probe. David Kim isn't giving up.
David Kim keeps moving his Probe around, Yeon-Ho needs that expansion so he can get more resources. The Protoss player has now blocked the expansion, and Yeon-Ho has given up on it, going back to resourcing while David Kim scouts the Zerg base. Now David Kim is even distracting Drones with his Probe. David Kim's Probe is doing a great job of distracting Drones, hurting Yeon-Ho's economy further.
Harassing the other player's economy is very important. There is a faster way to reach each other than walking around the Watch Tower. There are Destructible Rocks to be destroyed that will provide access to a bridge to walk units across. Destroying the rocks is very important, and can give a player the chance to surprise the enemy. David Kim is now building a Cybernetics Core and Assimilator, so we will see him build Stalkers. Yeon-Ho is still being harassed by David Kim on his resources. David Kim's Probe goes to block another expansion attempt by Yeon-Ho, but can he make it? No! The Probe couldn't make it, but David Kim has still done a great job harassing. The Protoss player controls the Watch Tower, but an Overlord can see the Probe as Zerglings move across the map. The Overlord can see the Probe, so the Zerglings can attack it. Will the Probe be able to make it back to its base? We have a couple more Zerglings chasing in behind him, but the Probe moves fast enough to escape the Zerglings.
David Kim doesn't have much defense, only a couple Nullifiers. Nullifiers have Force Field to block terrain and block forces. Eight Zerglings move to engage, but two Force Fields block them. The Zerglings are chased into the Protoss base and eliminated.
The Probes could attack them, but the Zerglings are killed by the Nullifiers, and can now protect the front of the Protoss base. The Zerg are trying to gather more forces behind the smoke vents, but it is not enough to kill the Zealot and Nullifiers. They must run to survive. It looks like David Kim might have just barely seen that one Zergling move around the outside, and David was going for his natural expand as well. The Probe saw all of these Zerglings, so the Nullifiers are now chasing them. The Zerglings now have a chance to move into the Protoss base. Those Zerglings are going to see what they can do, but Nullifiers are warped in to protect the Protoss base, and now the Nullifiers stop the Zerglings with Force Field and kill the threat.
So generally you see Force Field used as more of a defensive measure, but in that case David Kim actually used it to trap his enemy within his base to kill his forces. Force Field can be used both offensively and defensively. The Overlord is now being harassed by Nullifiers, and just barely gets away. Now David Kim is massing his forces over by the Xel'Naga Watch Tower where he can now see that very large area of vision which is very strong. He sees no units coming, he knows he just killed a bunch of Yeon-Ho Lee's Zerglings, so it is time to take advantage of that window of opportunity.
David Kim wants to use this advantage, but is held off at the natural expansion and moves into the main Zerg base. But there's too many Roaches, the Nullifiers have to continue to move up. They lock out all of Yeon-Ho's defenses except for just a Queen and one Roach which are forced to Burrow. The Nullifiers can now attack what they want. Force Field blocks all of the units, and the Drones burrow for safety, now unable to resource. The Drones and Roaches attack once Force Field wears off. There is another Watch Tower and a High-Yield expansion in the Southern part of the map. Yeon-Ho moves in Roaches to attack David Kim's base.
The Roaches clearly outnumber the Stalkers, but David Kim is using Blink very well. All of the Roaches get the Stalkers very low, but David Kim Blinks them out before they die. David Kim now uses a Force Field to trap the Roaches in his natural expansion as he micros and takes out the Zerg threat. The Force Field and Blink really helped David Kim there, the Roach regeneration is very fast, but they are no match for the Stalker's Blink micro. David Kim has now finished off the Zerg attack and instead starts chasing down the remaining Roaches with his new warped-in Stalkers. David Kim is also harassing Overlords with his Phoenix.
We see a ton of Stalkers moving up into Yeon-Ho Lee's expansion but there are too many Zerglings, those Stalkers are not strong enough against units that can surround them. They only have Blink, and that's on a ten-second cooldown so they will be surrounded again. The units that David Kim used to attack were badly damaged and died. Now a Phoenix and Void Ray are moving in, using Graviton Beam to pick up the Queen and kill it. The Zerg player is still trying to keep the pressure on, attacking David Kim's natural. The Protoss player takes advantage of the choke and stops the attack on his natural, but now the Zerg moves for the Protoss main base.
David Kim's base is very defenseless, and a couple Zerglings are moving away from the pack to turn into Banelings. Zerglings and Roaches distract the Protoss to prevent them from seeing the vulnerable Banelings morphing. Those Banelings do explode when they get close to the enemy, and here they come. He used the Banelings to kill some of David Kim's Probes and one of his Photon Cannons. Yeon-Ho tried to do damage to David Kim, but David still has the economic advantage with 44 Probes to Yeon-Ho's 37 Drones.
The Zerg player really needs to keep building workers to stay in this game. The Protoss player is now tearing through the Destructible Rocks to surprise his enemy. Apparently, it isn't much of a surprise attack, Yeon-Ho is preparing by morphing some Banelings and baiting the Protoss army into them. The Banelings destroyed the Zealots, and the Protoss force is only able to barely escape because of well-placed Force Fields.
David Kim is currently resourcing double the minerals per minute that Yeon-Ho Lee is able to gather. David Kim is bound to out-mass Yeon-Ho. He's really going to have to take advantage of his expansion. A couple Banelings were killed before they could finish, and now other Banelings underground attack and destroy Nullifiers. David Kim is using Blink, but he is having trouble against the persistent Zerg force. Here comes an Infester, they have a Neural Parasite which is that mind-control, and here we can see him mind-control and now he is using an Immortal to kill David Kim's Stalkers.
Yeon-Ho has now lost many units and his Queens. A combination of Zerglings and Infesters are just barely able to hold off the Protoss attack. Losing three Queens is a really big deal for Yeon-Ho at this point, because he really needs to have them out on the field to give him that extra spawn of larva. He really needs that for his economy, it is very, very important. The Protoss player is secretly teching to Colossus while Zerglings are held off by the Photon Cannon fire.
David Kim is trying to make a move, but Yeon-Ho can see his plans because there are Burrowed Infesters scouting around. The Zerg player is unaware of the Colossus threat. The Protoss player is also setting up a Warp Prism to Warp-in some additional units behind the Zerg player's base. As David Kim moves his Colossus into play, Yeon-Ho uses Neural Parasite to control them and kill David Kim's army.
He is using the Colossus to do terrible, terrible damage to David Kim's own army. We can see now that the Zerglings are able to finish off the Colossus as Neural Parasite ends. The brutal Protoss attack was thwarted by the Zerg, but it was only a distraction because the Protoss player has now destroyed most of the Zerg bases. Here the Stalkers are tearing up this Zerg expansion. We can see a few Infestors and a couple Queens come into play. That Neural Parasite is coming into play again, taking over a couple Stalkers and able to finish off that force. We could see the Queen was trying to take out the Phase Prism, but four Immortals Warp-in to play, and there is just not much that Yeon-Ho is able to do to stop it.
What a huge force, and there is the GG. The Zerg knows that game is effectively done. “Good game,” he says to David Kim. What a great game between those two players, we saw some excellent micro between Roaches and Burrow as well as the Stalkers with Blink. Thanks everybody for joining us for this StarCraft II Battle Report.
